How your project runs
Teams we have built for:

The Problem
3DS either runs on every card and adds friction, or runs on too few and leaves fraud chargebacks with you. Few stores check which orders were actually authenticated.
01 ยท Blocked pop-ups
Your checkout blocks the bank's challenge, and the order fails.
We fix the blocked pop-ups and outdated flows behind failed checks.
02 ยท Unchecked orders
A large order from a brand-new account ships unauthenticated.
Risk-based rules run authentication on the orders that carry real risk.
03 ยท Fraud chargebacks
Weeks later, that order returns as a fraud chargeback.
Fraud disputes on authenticated orders typically shift to the card issuer.
04 ยท No visibility
Nobody can say which orders 3DS covered or why cards fail.
Every order logs its 3DS result and ECI code for disputes.
Your buyer in Germany gets their bank's challenge, but your checkout's security settings block the pop-up and the order fails. An hour later, a large order from a brand-new account ships with no authentication at all. 6 weeks after that, it comes back as a fraud chargeback. Your gateway dashboard says 3DS is on, yet nobody on your team can say which orders it covered or why good cards keep failing.
We start by reading your gateway's 3DS results: which orders were authenticated, frictionless, or challenged, and which failed and why. Then we set risk-based rules, so 3DS runs on the orders that carry risk and good buyers keep a fast checkout. We fix the blocked pop-ups and outdated flows behind failed checks, and log the result on every order. Fraud disputes on authenticated orders typically move to the card issuer instead of staying on your account.
Rules, not blanket challenges
3DS runs where risk is real, so low-risk buyers keep a fast checkout.
Results you can prove
Every order logs its 3DS result and ECI code, ready for any fraud dispute.
Failed checks fixed
Blocked pop-ups, old 3DS1 flows, and in-app browsers get fixed before they cost sales.
Our 3DS Setup Process
You see how 3DS behaves on your orders today before we change a rule. You approve every rule, then watch test cards run through each flow.
We pull 90 days of payments from your gateway and check which were authenticated, frictionless, challenged, or failed. You get a short report on fraud chargebacks without 3DS and good orders lost to failed checks.
What's Included
Every setup covers the audit, the rules, the build, and the logging, so you know which orders ran 3DS, why, and what happened next.
Compare Options
Gateway defaults cost nothing, and forcing 3DS on every order is simple. Both suit some stores. Here's where each leaves fraud or friction behind.
| Feature | DeveloperLookBest fit | Gateway defaults | 3DS on every order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup cost | From $600, fixed | Free with your gateway | Free to switch on |
| When 3DS runs | Risky orders, by your rules | When law or the bank requires | Every card payment |
| Friction for good buyers | Low for low-risk orders | Low unless the bank asks | High on every order |
| Fraud liability coverage | Risky orders authenticated | Only where 3DS ran | Widest of the three |
| Failed check diagnosis | Causes found and fixed | Error codes only | More failures to chase |
| Result logging | Result and ECI per order | Gateway dashboard | Gateway dashboard |
| UK and EU rules | Exemptions where allowed | Handled by the gateway | Handled, with more challenges |
| Tuning after launch | Thresholds tuned on results | Stays at defaults | Nothing to tune |
Projects We've Built
Online stores and shopping apps we've designed and built. 3DS rules and checkout fixes plug into the payment flows of stores like these.
What Our Clients Say
Feedback from teams we have built online stores and payment workflows for.
We had a different kind of problem. People were visiting the store, adding products to their carts, and then disappearing before they finished the order. We had tried a few apps and made changes here and there, but nothing really seemed to solve the bigger issue. The team went through the shopping experience with us and pointed out things we hadn't really noticed ourselves. They cleaned up the cart and checkout flow, made the mobile experience much smoother, and helped us make the store feel easier to shop. Iโm not going to pretend we fixed everything overnight, but it finally feels like the store is helping the sale instead of getting in the way of it.
The mobile experience is probably my favourite part of the new site. We had spent a lot of time making sure the desktop version looked right, and the team kept pushing us to think about how everything would actually feel on a phone too. They were right. The navigation is clean, the interactions feel natural, and everything weโve tested so far works exactly as it should. They also went through the links, forms, integrations, and other details more than once before launch, which I really appreciated. And even after going live, we could still reach out when something came up. The whole process felt friendly, organised, and surprisingly straightforward.
We had a pretty specific idea of what we wanted our website to become, but I wasnโt sure how easily we could explain all of it to a development team. There were quite a few moving parts, and we were working toward a deadline, so I expected a few things to get lost along the way. That never really happened. They understood what we were trying to achieve, kept us updated throughout the process, and got everything ready within the agreed timeline. The final site feels much easier to navigate, works beautifully on mobile, and is noticeably smoother for our customers. It was a huge relief seeing the original idea actually turn into the website we had in mind.

Work Culture
Authentication sits at the exact moment a buyer pays. These habits keep 3DS where risk is and out of your good buyers' way.
We read your gateway's 3DS results before changing anything. You see which orders were challenged, which failed, and which fraud chargebacks skipped 3DS.
A blanket challenge taxes every loyal buyer. We tie 3DS to the signals that predict fraud in your store, like new accounts or high order values.
We run test cards through frictionless, challenge, and failure paths on desktop and mobile. Blocked pop-ups get caught in testing, not by your customers.
Authentication usually moves fraud liability to the issuer, but nobody can guarantee it. We log each order's result, so you know where you stand.
We compare checkout completion before and after the rules go live. If good buyers start failing, we loosen thresholds instead of shrugging.
You approve the rules and a fixed price after the free audit. Any gateway or Radar fees are billed separately by the provider.
Overview

Good fit
Stores absorbing fraud chargebacks
You pay for stolen-card orders months later, and your Stripe or Braintree dashboard shows most of them didn't run 3DS.
Brands selling to UK and EU buyers
Your European buyers see a 3D Secure credit card check on nearly every order, and some fail the bank's check and leave.
Stores losing good orders at checkout
Your support inbox fills with buyers whose cards failed at the bank's pop-up, and your WooCommerce or custom checkout hides the challenge.
Shopify stores on Shopify Payments
You sell on Shopify Payments, where 3DS runs only when the card's bank asks for it, and you want risky orders held when it doesn't.
Agencies with payment work
Your agency builds checkouts for clients and needs a white-label partner for 3DS rules, PayPal or Stripe testing, and failed-check fixes.
Not a fit
Address and CVV checks
You need billing address and CVV checks rather than bank authentication. Our AVS and Address Verification Setup service covers that smaller job.
Delivery disputes
Most of your disputes are item not received or not as described claims. 3DS doesn't cover those, and Chargeback Management Services handle them.
Full fraud program
You want a full fraud program with scoring and review queues. Our Ecommerce Fraud Prevention Services treat 3DS as one layer of that.
Shopify Payments, few disputes
You're on Shopify Payments with few fraud chargebacks. Its built-in 3DS may already cover you, and if it does, we'll tell you before we quote a $600 setup.

3DS is the card networks' authentication step, run by the buyer's bank during checkout. The bank checks device and order data. Then it approves quietly (the frictionless flow) or asks the buyer to confirm in their banking app. Major card brands no longer support the old 3DS1, so today's checks run on 3DS2.
When 3DS authenticates a payment, fraud disputes on it typically become the card issuer's cost instead of yours. Stripe notes the shift isn't guaranteed: networks can remove it for merchants in fraud monitoring programs. It also covers only fraud claims, so item not received disputes still need your evidence.
3DS setup starts at $600 for an audit and risk-based rules on one gateway. A custom checkout or mobile app integration costs $1,500. Programs for up to 3 gateways, with UK and EU exemptions, start at $3,000. Gateway or Radar fees, if any, are billed by the provider.
Rules on one gateway take about 1 week, and a custom checkout integration takes 2 to 3 weeks. Programs across several gateways take 4 to 5 weeks. Most of that time is testing every path with test cards on desktop and mobile, then watching your real orders for 30 to 90 days.
3DS pays for itself when your fraud chargebacks cost more than the sales lost to extra checks. A store with steady stolen-card disputes on high-value orders usually gains. One with rare fraud and impulse buys may not, so we compare your chargeback costs with failed checks in the free audit.
It can, when every order gets a challenge or the challenge fails to load. 3DS2 lets your buyer's bank approve many payments without asking them anything, and risk-based rules limit challenges to orders that need them. We compare checkout completion before and after launch, then adjust your thresholds.
It depends on who controls 3DS. On Stripe, Radar can request 3DS for risky payments, and custom checkouts use Payment Intents. Shopify Payments runs 3DS only when the card's bank requires it, so we add holds for risky orders instead. Braintree, Adyen, and Authorize.net set 3DS in their own SDKs or dashboards.
Yes, on gateways that let you request it. On Stripe, Radar can request 3DS based on risk, and Radar Plus adds your own rules, such as order value or country. Other gateways accept a 3DS request per payment from your fraud tool. Regulation can still require 3DS for your UK and EU buyers.
Find where the challenge breaks first. Common causes are security settings that block the bank's frame, a sandboxed iframe, in-app browsers that drop the pop-up, and mobile timeouts. Stripe's docs say your content security policy must allow its 3DS frames. We replay test cards on each device to confirm every fix.
No, only fraud chargebacks. If a buyer claims an item didn't arrive or wasn't as described, 3DS doesn't help, and you'll need delivery proof and a clear response. You also must answer inquiries on authenticated payments, since an unanswered one can become a chargeback that voids the shift.
