The Problem
Theme trouble rarely starts on day one. A Marketplace theme gets patched for years, apps add their own scripts, and the storefront drifts away from the brand it was meant to show.
01 · Lost edits
Direct template edits disappear whenever the theme gets updated.
Theme code lives in Git, so changes survive updates and can be rolled back.
02 · Brand fit
The Marketplace theme looks like every other store using it.
Figma designs for your key templates, built as a Stencil theme around your brand.
03 · Content edits
Changing a homepage banner still needs a developer.
Theme settings and Page Builder regions let your team edit layouts directly.
04 · Mobile speed
Category pages crawl on phones as the catalog grows.
Templates request only the data they show, and images are sized per device.
You bought a Marketplace theme years ago, and it still looks like the demo with your logo on top. A developer once edited the templates directly, so nobody dares click Update. Changing a homepage banner means waiting for that developer. Apps inject their own scripts, and category pages drag on phones. If you're still on a Blueprint theme, Page Builder isn't even an option. The store sells, but the storefront no longer matches the brand or the catalog behind it.
We start with the theme you have: its edits, its apps, and the templates that sell the most. Then we design those templates in Figma and build a Stencil theme on Cornerstone's structure with the Stencil CLI. Colors, banners, and layouts become settings your team edits in Page Builder, and every change lives in Git. You get a storefront that fits your brand, not a demo with a new logo.
Built on Cornerstone's structure
Custom themes start from the reference theme BigCommerce maintains, so later platform changes are easier to merge.
Editable without a developer
Banners, colors, and section layouts become Page Builder settings your marketing team changes directly.
Tested on real phones
Every template is checked on mid-range phones with Lighthouse before the theme goes live.
Our BigCommerce Theme Process
You see what a customization can fix before we quote a custom theme, then approve the designs and preview every template before it goes live.
We look at your current theme, its direct edits, the apps that inject scripts, and the templates that bring in the most orders. You get a short list of what a customization would fix and whether a custom theme is worth it.
What's Included
Every project is scoped to your current theme, catalog, and team. Most combine these six parts, from Figma designs to a Stencil theme your staff can edit in Page Builder.

Projects We've Built
Storefronts we designed and built for fashion, furniture, art, and hardware brands. They run on different platforms, but the template and design work carries over to Stencil.
What Our Clients Say
Feedback from teams we have built online stores and websites for.
We had a pretty specific idea of what we wanted our website to become, but I wasn’t sure how easily we could explain all of it to a development team. There were quite a few moving parts, and we were working toward a deadline, so I expected a few things to get lost along the way. That never really happened. They understood what we were trying to achieve, kept us updated throughout the process, and got everything ready within the agreed timeline. The final site feels much easier to navigate, works beautifully on mobile, and is noticeably smoother for our customers. It was a huge relief seeing the original idea actually turn into the website we had in mind.
The mobile experience is probably my favourite part of the new site. We had spent a lot of time making sure the desktop version looked right, and the team kept pushing us to think about how everything would actually feel on a phone too. They were right. The navigation is clean, the interactions feel natural, and everything we’ve tested so far works exactly as it should. They also went through the links, forms, integrations, and other details more than once before launch, which I really appreciated. And even after going live, we could still reach out when something came up. The whole process felt friendly, organised, and surprisingly straightforward.
What I appreciate most is that the website is actually easy for us to manage now. We can update content ourselves instead of sending a developer a message every time we need to change something small. They also paid attention to the technical SEO side, which mattered to us because we didn’t want a new website to create problems for the traffic we already had. I’ve probably asked more questions than I should have since launch, but every question has been handled patiently and without any fuss. The team is easy to work with, they explain things clearly, and when we need something changed, they focus on getting it done rather than making the process complicated.

Work Culture
Good theme work disappears into the store: pages load, edits stick, and your team changes content alone. These habits make that happen on every theme we build.
We check whether a customized Marketplace theme covers your needs before we suggest a custom build. If one already does, we'll tell you before we quote.
Each template's front matter requests just the products, reviews, or categories that page displays. Category pages stay quick even as your catalog and filters grow.
Colors, banners, and section layouts become theme settings and Page Builder regions. Your marketing team updates a seasonal homepage without waiting on a developer.
Every theme version is uploaded to My Themes and previewed with your real catalog first. Your live storefront keeps selling until you approve the switch.
Template changes are committed to Git with a short note explaining why. A bad edit gets rolled back in one step instead of being rebuilt from memory.
Theme files, Figma designs, and the repository stay in your company's accounts. You can bring the work in-house or switch developers whenever you like.
Overview
DeveloperLook handles BigCommerce theme development for stores that have outgrown a Marketplace theme or still run Blueprint. We design key templates in Figma, build a custom Stencil theme on Cornerstone's structure, add Page Builder settings, and keep the code in Git. Projects start at $1,050, take 2 to 10 weeks, and you own the theme.

Good fit
Brands on a lightly edited Marketplace theme
Your store runs a Marketplace theme with a few edits, and it still looks like the demo while competitors show a distinct brand.
Stores still running a Blueprint theme
Your store opened before Stencil, and the old Blueprint theme can't use Page Builder or the storefront features you keep reading about.
Marketing teams waiting on developers
Your team needs a developer for every banner or layout change, so seasonal campaigns launch late or get dropped entirely.
Brands ready to hire for one project
You want to hire BigCommerce theme developers for a defined redesign, without keeping a full-time developer on payroll after launch.
Agencies with BigCommerce clients
Your agency designed a BigCommerce redesign and needs Stencil developers to build it under your brand, on your client's timeline.
Not a fit
Apps and ERP syncs needed
You need private apps, ERP syncs, or a Catalyst headless storefront rather than theme work. Our BigCommerce Development Services page covers that wider build.
Platform not chosen yet
You want store UX and visual design before you pick a platform. Our Ecommerce Website Design Services team designs for any platform first.
Budget under $1,050
Your budget is under $1,050, or you only need new colors and a logo. Cornerstone's built-in theme settings will cover that at no cost.
Moving to Shopify
You've already decided to leave BigCommerce. Our BigCommerce to Shopify Migration team moves products, customers, orders, and redirects instead.

FAQ
Straight answers on BigCommerce theme costs, Stencil, old themes, and hiring a theme developer.

Send a message or book a call with the team.
Theme work with DeveloperLook starts at $1,050 for customizing the Stencil theme you already run. A custom theme designed in Figma and built on Cornerstone's structure starts at $3,450. Blueprint rebuilds, multi-storefront themes, and wholesale templates start at $7,100. Paid Marketplace themes and BigCommerce plan fees are billed separately, and your price is fixed in writing after a free theme review.
A theme customization takes 2 to 3 weeks, and a custom Stencil theme takes 5 to 10 weeks. Design approval is usually the longest wait, so we lock the homepage, category, and product templates first. Blueprint rebuilds sit at the long end, because every old customization has to be found and rebuilt by hand.
There isn't one best BigCommerce theme: the right one matches your catalog size, filters, and brand. Cornerstone is the free theme BigCommerce maintains as the base for Stencil work, and many stores run it with light changes. Paid Marketplace themes add layouts and features. We suggest customizing one of those first and going custom only when your templates truly need it.
Stencil lets developers build themes locally with the Stencil CLI and preview them against the store's live data before uploading. Templates use Handlebars, and each one declares the store data it needs in its front matter. Settings defined in config.json appear in Page Builder, so merchants change colors and layouts without touching code.
BigCommerce themes use Handlebars templates, SCSS for styles, and JavaScript for interactive features. Theme settings live in JSON files such as config.json and schema.json. You don't need PHP or any server language, because BigCommerce hosts the store and renders the templates. Headless storefronts differ: Catalyst runs on React and Next.js, which our BigCommerce Development Services page covers.
Switch because Stencil is BigCommerce's current theme platform, and Blueprint themes can no longer be bought or added. Stencil themes work with Page Builder, local development, and newer storefront features. Your Blueprint customizations don't move across automatically, so we list them first, back up the old theme, and rebuild only what you still use.
The old themes ran on Blueprint, BigCommerce's earlier theme engine, which Stencil replaced. The Blueprint marketplace is closed to new purchases, though stores keep the Blueprint themes they already bought. New stores start on Stencil. If your store still runs Blueprint, its customizations have to be rebuilt in Stencil, because switching themes doesn't copy them over.
BigCommerce's Theme Marketplace lists a small set of free themes and a much larger paid catalog. The count changes as designers add and retire themes. Filter the Marketplace by price and industry to see today's number. Every Marketplace theme runs on Stencil, so any of them can be customized with the same tools we use.
Choose a BigCommerce theme developer who can show live Stencil stores and keeps theme code in Git rather than editing it in the browser. When you compare BigCommerce custom theme development agencies, ask what your team will control in Page Builder after launch. Searches for "big commerce custom design" often turn up design-only studios, so check that your BigCommerce design partner also writes the Stencil code.
You own it: the theme files, the Figma designs, and the Git repository sit in accounts under your company's name. A short handover guide lists every theme setting and custom widget, so any Stencil developer can continue the work. Support runs 30 to 90 days after launch depending on plan, and new templates later get their own fixed quote.
