The Problem
It usually starts with a quick fix. A past developer changed a core file to add a feature, and now every upgrade either breaks that feature or gets pushed back another term.
Core edits
A past developer changed core files to add a feature.
Core edits
Custom logic moves into local plugins, so core files match the official release.
Stuck version
Upgrades break custom pages, so the site stays on old releases.
Stuck version
Each upgrade runs on a staging copy before your learners see it.
Slow pages
Course pages crawl when every learner signs in at once.
Slow pages
Caching, sessions, and cron are tuned on the server your Moodle runs on.
Plugin sprawl
Nobody knows which installed plugins are still maintained.
Plugin sprawl
Every plugin is listed with its support status, and unused ones come out safely.
Your Moodle still runs 4.1 because the last upgrade test broke your custom enrollment page. Course pages crawl on Monday mornings when every learner signs in at once. Teachers ask for a dashboard block that doesn't exist, and your IT team can't tell which installed plugins are still maintained. Somebody edited a core file years ago, and nobody remembers which one. Security support for 4.1 ended in December 2025, so each month you wait adds risk.
We start with an audit of your Moodle: version, plugins, core changes, server settings, and which pages are slow. Then every change moves where Moodle expects it: local plugins for custom logic, blocks and reports for new screens, a Boost child theme for your brand. Caching and cron get tuned so pages load faster. The core stays untouched, so your next upgrade is a planned weekend instead of a crisis.
Custom features as plugins
Your blocks, reports, activities, and enrollment rules built as plugins that survive upgrades.
Your brand on a child theme
A Boost child theme carries your colors, fonts, and layout without forking the default theme.
Pages that hold up under load
Caching and cron tuned so your course pages stay quick when a whole cohort signs in.
Our Moodle Development Services Process
You approve the audit findings, the plan for each change, and every release on a staging copy of your Moodle before it reaches your learners.
We review your version, installed plugins, core changes, theme, and server settings. You get a written report on what blocks an upgrade and what each fix would cost. It's yours even if your own team does the work.
What's Included
You get an audit, custom plugins, a child theme, integrations, tuning, tested upgrades, and documentation your team can follow, all outside Moodle's core code.
Compare Options
An in-house developer knows your courses best, and a freelancer can be the cheapest way to fix one plugin. Here is how a Moodle development company compares on upgrades and testing.
| Feature | DeveloperLookBest fit | In-house developer | Freelancer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade safety | Plugins only, core untouched | Depends on their Moodle experience | Varies by freelancer |
| Moodle API depth | Plugins, themes, and web services | Learned as needed | Strong in one area |
| Testing | Staging copy plus load tests | On your own servers | Depends on the freelancer |
| Speed to start | Audit within a week | Right away, if on staff | Can start this week |
| Cost of one fix | From $900, fixed | Salary already paid | Lowest hourly rate |
| Upgrade planning | LTS path written down | Fits around other work | Rarely in scope |
| After release | 30 days of support included | Ongoing, part of the job | Ends with the contract |
| Code ownership | Your repository and plugins | Yours by default | Check the contract |
Projects We've Built
Learning platforms we have designed and built with courses, progress tracking, and admin dashboards. They're custom builds, not Moodle sites.

What Our Clients Say
Feedback from teams we have built learning platforms, portals, and web apps for.
We had a pretty specific idea of what we wanted our website to become, but I wasn’t sure how easily we could explain all of it to a development team. There were quite a few moving parts, and we were working toward a deadline, so I expected a few things to get lost along the way. That never really happened. They understood what we were trying to achieve, kept us updated throughout the process, and got everything ready within the agreed timeline. The final site feels much easier to navigate, works beautifully on mobile, and is noticeably smoother for our customers. It was a huge relief seeing the original idea actually turn into the website we had in mind.
The mobile experience is probably my favourite part of the new site. We had spent a lot of time making sure the desktop version looked right, and the team kept pushing us to think about how everything would actually feel on a phone too. They were right. The navigation is clean, the interactions feel natural, and everything we’ve tested so far works exactly as it should. They also went through the links, forms, integrations, and other details more than once before launch, which I really appreciated. And even after going live, we could still reach out when something came up. The whole process felt friendly, organised, and surprisingly straightforward.
What I appreciate most is that the website is actually easy for us to manage now. We can update content ourselves instead of sending a developer a message every time we need to change something small. They also paid attention to the technical SEO side, which mattered to us because we didn’t want a new website to create problems for the traffic we already had. I’ve probably asked more questions than I should have since launch, but every question has been handled patiently and without any fuss. The team is easy to work with, they explain things clearly, and when we need something changed, they focus on getting it done rather than making the process complicated.

Work Culture
Your Moodle carries grades, certificates, and compliance records. These habits keep it upgradeable and fast while we add what your teachers and admins asked for.
Every change lives in a plugin or child theme, so your core files match the official release. That one habit is what keeps your upgrades on schedule.
The Moodle plugins directory may already hold what you need. If a maintained plugin covers your request, we'll recommend it before we quote custom work.
We test on a copy of your site with real courses and anonymized users. Your learners only see a change after your admins sign it off.
We deploy when nobody is mid-quiz, usually evenings or weekends in your time zone. Exam weeks and term starts get a change freeze you set.
Each plugin, theme, or upgrade has its own fixed price in the proposal. You can approve one now and schedule the rest for next term.
Plugins are committed to your Git repository under your organization's name. Any developer who knows Moodle can pick them up later, with or without us.
Overview
DeveloperLook does Moodle development for schools, universities, and corporate training teams. We build custom plugins and Boost child themes, connect SSO and student systems, tune performance, and upgrade sites to Moodle 5.3 LTS. Fixed-scope work starts at $900, takes 1 to 14 weeks, and leaves core code untouched.

Good fit
Universities and colleges on self-hosted Moodle
Your IT team runs Moodle for every course on campus and needs Moodle developers for plugin work it can't fit around daily support.
Corporate training teams with compliance courses
You assign compliance training through Moodle, and HR and auditors need completion reports and certificates without spreadsheet exports.
Schools stuck on an old version
Your site still runs an unsupported release because the last upgrade broke custom features, and you want a tested path to 5.3 LTS.
Training companies selling courses on Moodle
You sell courses to other businesses and need company accounts, seat-based enrollment, and branded portals inside one Moodle site.
IT leads who need extra Moodle help
You need a Moodle developer for a few weeks to build one plugin, review a vendor's code, or plan the next upgrade.
Not a fit
Budget under $900
You need one setting changed or one directory plugin installed. Your hosting provider or a short admin session will cost less than a project.
Staying on MoodleCloud
You're happy on MoodleCloud, which doesn't allow installing plugins. Custom plugin work needs a self-hosted Moodle LMS, so stay put if its standard features cover you.
Selling courses to the public
You sell video courses to individual learners and want a sales-first platform. Teachable and Thinkific Setup gets you checkout, sales pages, and email faster than Moodle.
One-to-one tutoring
You schedule private lessons between tutors and students rather than running courses. Tutoring Platform Development covers booking, packages, and tutor pay.

Pricing
These are starting points in USD. Your final price depends on your Moodle version, the plugins and integrations you need, and your hosting, and you get a fixed proposal after a free Moodle audit.
For Agencies
You own the relationship with the school or training client. We supply the Moodle work behind it: plugins, themes, integrations, and upgrades, built and tested under your agency's name. Your client sees your project manager, not ours.
White label: your client only ever sees your brand
Send staging access and the client's wish list, and we audit it in writing.
We build each change as a plugin and test it on staging under your brand.
You release on your schedule while we support the changes for 30 days.

Our Moodle work starts at $900 for a health check, up to 3 fixes, and server tuning. A branded child theme with 2 custom plugins and SSO is $2,750, and a major upgrade with several integrations starts at $6,200. Every price is fixed after the free audit, so you know the cost before work starts.
Fixes and tuning take 1 to 2 weeks. A custom theme with plugins takes 4 to 8 weeks, and an upgrade with integrations takes 8 to 14 weeks. Most of the difference is testing time on staging. We schedule releases around your term dates, so a project can pause for exam weeks.
It's extending the Moodle learning platform with code: plugins, themes, and integrations that add what a standard install lacks. Work ranges from a small report block to a custom activity type or a sync with your student records. Done well, it all sits outside core files, so your upgrades stay routine.
A Moodle developer is a PHP developer who knows Moodle's plugin types, APIs, and coding rules, and can change what your site does. They write plugins with names like local_, block_, or mod_, build themes with Mustache templates, and test with PHPUnit and Behat. Your admins configure Moodle, while developers change the code.
You develop it in layers: install Moodle LMS, configure courses and roles, then add plugins and a theme for what settings can't do. We set up a staging copy first, build changes there, and move them to production through Git, so your live site only gets tested code.
You start by picking the plugin type that fits: local for background logic, block for a sidebar widget, or mod for a new activity. Your plugin needs a version.php file, language strings, and its own database tables if it stores data. Moodle then installs it on your site through its normal upgrade process.
Moodle is developed in PHP, with JavaScript in the browser and Mustache templates for page markup. Moodle 5.3, the October 2026 LTS release, needs PHP 8.3 or newer and runs on PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or Microsoft SQL Server. Oracle support ended with Moodle 5.0, so older Oracle sites move databases during the upgrade.
Yes. Moodle 5.3 upgrades directly only from 4.4 or later, so an older site goes through an intermediate version first. Your whole upgrade path runs on staging first, and plugins without a 5.3 release get replaced or rewritten. Moodle 5.3 gets security fixes until October 2029.
Yes. A single plugin is quoted on its own after the free audit, and our Moodle Tune-Up plan covers up to 3 small fixes. You can stop after that one plugin or bring us back before the next upgrade. Either way, the code lands in your repository with an admin guide.
Yes. Every plugin and theme is committed to your organization's Git repository under the GNU GPL, the license Moodle code uses. We aren't a Moodle Certified Partner, so for Moodle Workplace licenses or Moodle's own support contracts, Moodle's partner directory is the right place to look.
